China is undergoing the largest and fastest process of population ageing in the world. By the end of last year, the number of people aged 60 and above had exceeded 300 million, accounting for more than 21 percent of the total population. This profound demographic shift places strain on the country’s old-age care, medical and social security systems, yet it also gives rise to enormous opportunities for development. In recent years, localities across the country have worked to improve an elderly care service system in which home-based, community-based and institutional care complement one another and in which medical treatment is integrated with health and wellness care. They have also vigorously fostered new forms of the silver economy, such as smart elderly care, rehabilitation aids and senior tourism. We must face up to the challenges squarely, and at the same time be adept at turning the “demographic dividend” into a “talent dividend”, so that hundreds of millions of older people can share in the fruits of reform and development and enjoy a happy life in their later years.

Ageing is not merely a demographic statistic; it is a lived reality that reshapes labour markets, public budgets and family life alike. Across advanced economies, the share of people over 65 is projected to approach one in four by 2050, while the working-age population continues to shrink. Policymakers have responded by raising retirement ages, encouraging later-life employment and investing in long-term care infrastructure. Yet the most promising approaches go beyond fiscal arithmetic. They recognise that older adults are not simply a burden to be financed but a resource to be mobilised — as mentors, caregivers, consumers and volunteers. Cities that redesign housing, transport and digital services with ageing in mind tend to become more liveable for everyone, young and old alike.

Repetition

Repetition

Ageing reshapes labour markets, public budgets and family life alike.

Yet the most promising approaches go beyond fiscal arithmetic. They recognise that older adults are a resource to be mobilised.

原文:...a resource to be mobilised — as mentors, caregivers, consumers and volunteers.

We must safeguard the lawful rights and interests of older people, as well as their medical needs and their spiritual well-being.

考场提示:英译汉遇到 do so / one / that of / the former…the latter 等替代结构,多半就是需要重复还原的信号。
