示范篇目:THE STORY OF SILK(剑 11 T3P1) 练习题库:剑 9 / 10 / 11 配套课后:Crop-growing skyscrapers 填空

→ 英文原句:原文 "only royalty were entitled to have clothes made of silk" → 填 royalty

ONE WORD / NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS / TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER

为什么卡字数:剑雅 summary 题写 "the production of silk" 超 ONE WORD,正确只能写 "silk"。

Q2 "Situated in the heart of urban centres" → Q3 后句 "return energy to the grid..."

→ 英文原句:produce → manufacture;most → majority;rear → raise;used as → served as

THE STORY OF SILK(剑 11 Test 3 Passage 1 · 节选)

1Legend has it that ... as she was taking a walk in her husband's gardens, she discovered that silkworms were responsible for the destruction of several mulberry trees. She collected a number of cocoons and sat down to have a rest. It just so happened that while she was sipping some tea, one of the cocoons that she had collected landed in the hot tea and started to unravel into a fine thread. Lei Tzu found that she could wind this thread around her fingers. Subsequently, she persuaded her husband to allow her to rear silkworms ... She also devised a special reel to draw the fibres from the cocoon into a single thread ...

2Originally, silkworm farming was solely restricted to women, and it was they who were responsible for the growing, harvesting and weaving. Silk quickly grew into a symbol of status, and originally, only royalty were entitled to have clothes made of silk. ... silk was also used as a unit of currency. Government officials were paid their salary in silk, and farmers paid their taxes in grain and silk. ... The earliest indication of silk paper being used was discovered in the tomb of a noble who is estimated to have died around 168 AD.

3Demand for this exotic fabric eventually created the lucrative trade route now known as the Silk Road, taking silk westward and bringing gold, silver and wool to the East.

4... according to another legend, monks working for the Byzantine emperor Justinian smuggled silkworm eggs to Constantinople in 550 AD, concealed inside hollow bamboo walking canes.

5Then in the twentieth century, new manmade fibres, such as nylon, started to be used in what had traditionally been silk products, such as stockings and parachutes.

HEven if you had never suspected that this is what was going on when leaves turn red, there are clues out there. One is straightforward: on many trees, the leaves that are the reddest are those on the side of the tree which gets most sun. Not only that, but the red is brighter on the upper side of the leaf. It has also been recognised for decades that the best conditions for intense red colours are dry, sunny days and cool nights ... And finally, trees such as maples usually get much redder the more north you travel in the northern hemisphere.

• The most vividly coloured red leaves are found on the side of the tree facing the
• The surfaces of leaves contain the most red pigment.
• Red leaves are most abundant when daytime weather conditions are and sunny.
• The intensity of the red colour increases as you go further
• Q19 中文"最红的叶子在朝___的树那面" → 原文 "the side ... which gets most sun" → sun
• Q20 中文"叶子的___面红色最浓" → 原文 "the upper side of the leaf" → upper

Q19 sun   Q20 upper   Q21 dry   Q22 north
练习 2 · SUMMARY 摘要填空(剑 9 T4P2 Young Children's Sense of Identity · Q24–26 · ONE WORD)

BAnother powerful source of information for infants about the effects they can have on the world around them is provided when others mimic them. Many parents spend a lot of time, particularly in the early months, copying their infant's vocalizations and expressions. In addition, young children enjoy looking in mirrors, where the movements they can see are dependent upon their own movements. This is not to say that infants recognise the reflection as their own image (a later development). However, Lewis and Brooks-Gunn (1979) suggest that infants' developing understanding that the movements they see in the mirror are contingent on their own, leads to a growing awareness that they are distinct from other people. This is because they, and only they, can change the reflection in the mirror.

CThis understanding that children gain of themselves as active agents continues to develop in their attempts to co-operate with others in play. Dunn (1988) points out that it is in such day-to-day relationships and interactions that the child's understanding of his- or herself emerges. Empirical investigations of the self-as-subject in young children are, however, rather scarce because of difficulties of communication: even if young infants can reflect on their experience, they certainly cannot express this aspect of the self directly.

GFinally, perhaps the most graphic expressions of self-awareness in general can be seen in the displays of rage which are most common from 18 months to 3 years of age. In a longitudinal study of groups of three or four children, Bronson (1975) found that the intensity of the frustration and anger in their disagreements increased sharply between the ages of 1 and 2 years. Often, the children's disagreements involved a struggle over a toy that none of them had played with before or after the tug-of-war: the children seemed to be disputing ownership rather than wanting to play with it. Although it may be less marked in other societies, the link between the sense of 'self' and of 'ownership' is a notable feature of childhood in Western societies.

First, children realise they can affect the world, for example by causing the image to move when they face a .
This aspect of self-awareness is difficult to research directly, because of problems.
The development of self awareness is often linked to a sense of , and can lead to disputes.

BGeo-engineering has been shown to work, at least on a small localised scale. For decades, May Day parades in Moscow have taken place under clear blue skies, aircraft having deposited dry ice, silver iodide and cement powder to disperse clouds. Many of the schemes now suggested look to do the opposite, and reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the planet. The most eye-catching idea of all is suggested by Professor Roger Angel of the University of Arizona. His scheme would employ up to 16 trillion minute spacecraft, each weighing about one gram, to form a transparent, sunlight-refracting sunshade in an orbit 1.5 million km above the Earth. This could, argues Angel, reduce the amount of light reaching the Earth by two per cent. The majority of geo-engineering projects so far carried out - which include planting forests in deserts and depositing iron in the ocean to stimulate the growth of algae - have focused on achieving a general cooling of the Earth. But some look specifically at reversing the melting at the poles, particularly the Arctic. The reasoning is that if you replenish the ice sheets and frozen waters of the high latitudes, more light will be reflected back into space, so reducing the warming of the oceans and atmosphere.

CThe concept of releasing aerosol sprays into the stratosphere above the Arctic has been proposed by several scientists. This would involve using sulphur or hydrogen sulphide aerosols so that sulphur dioxide would form clouds which would in turn lead to a global dimming. The idea is modelled on historic volcanic explosions, such as that of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, which led to a short-term cooling of global temperatures by 0.5 °C Scientists have also scrutinised whether it's possible to preserve the ice sheets of Greenland with reinforced high-tension cables, prevent icebergs from moving into the sea. Meanwhile in the Russian Arctic, geo-engineering plans include the planting of millions of birch trees. Whereas the region's native evergreen pines shade the snow and absorb radiation, birches would shed their leaves in winter, thus enabling radiation to be reflected by the snow. Re-routing Russian rivers to increase cold water flow to ice-forming areas could also be used to slow down warming, say some climate scientists.

ProcedureAim
put tiny spacecraft into orbit far above Earthto create a that reduces light reaching Earth
place in the seato encourage to form
release aerosol sprays into the stratosphereto create that reduce light
fix strong to Greenland ice sheetsto prevent icebergs moving into the sea
plant trees that lose leaves in winterto let the reflect radiation

练习 5 · FLOWCHART 流程图填空(剑 9 T3P3 The History of the Tortoise · Q34–39 · NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER)

DWalter Joyce and Jacques Gauthier, at Yale University, obtained three measurements in these particular bones of 71 species of living turtles and tortoises. They used a kind of triangular graph paper to plot the three measurements against one another. All the land tortoise species formed a tight cluster of points in the upper part of the triangle; all the water turtles cluster in the lower part of the triangular graph. There was no overlap, except when they added some species that spend time both in water and on land. Sure enough, these amphibious species show up on the triangular graph approximately half way between the 'wet cluster' of sea turtles and the 'dry cluster' of land tortoises. The next step was to determine where the fossils fell. The bones of P. quenstedti and P. talampayensis leave us in no doubt. Their points on the graph are right in the thick of the dry cluster. Both these fossils were dry-land tortoises. They come from the era before our turtles returned to the water.

Step 1
71 species examined; a total of taken from bones of forelimbs.
Step 2
Data recorded on (for comparing). Outcome: land tortoises = dense of points at top.
Step 3
Same data from living species added. Outcome: positioned about up the triangle.
Step 4
